Ben Lusher’s recent article on investing in Jewish learning at Moishe House brought back some good memories for me. During my 20 years in Chicago before Aliyah 37 years ago, I had the privilege of serving as Chair of the Board of Jewish Education of Metropolitan Chicago during my last three years in the city. The Superintendent of the BJE at the time was Rabbi Dr. Samuel Schafler, z”l who, by the way, always hated that title coming from New York where the “super” was the person you called when the heat was not working. After my election as chair he arranged to meet privately with me and raised two issues, one dealt with governance and the other with personal Jewish education.
