5780 — VaEra: The Name El Shaddai

Introduction

After the failure of Moshe’s mission to Pharaoh to free the Israelite slaves, God indicates that He will intervene forcefully. While He had appeared to the patriarchs and matriarchs employing the name El Shaddai, He will now make his name Y-H-V-H known to Israel. The commentaries grapple with these different names of God and in this podcast Rabbi Michael Hattin considers the thought-provoking formulation of the Ramban (Nachmanides).
