Vayigash 5779: Shaping a Theology of Forgiveness: Joseph, Free Will and Divine Providence

Introduction

Joseph is remarkable in his ability to forgive his brothers and see his years of suffering as God’s will. He and his brothers are paradigms of self-transformation. Joseph’s rapprochement with his brothers helps us to understand the connection between taking responsibility for what we have done, while acknowledging that there is a grand divine narrative at play.
