More about the project
The Student Torah Journal aims to foster and support Pardes students at the beginning of their Torah-writing journey. It encourages students to move from studying primary Jewish texts to writing about and interpreting them, giving them an opportunity to add their own diverse voices to the ongoing conversation of Torah and tradition. The project culminates in a digital publication of students’ work and is intended to encourage students to continue developing as interpreters, writers, and creators of Torah.
The fellowship follows the journal through the full academic year. In September, the Student Editor will meet with Rabbi Rahel Berkovits to determine the year’s theme and texts and establish deadlines. The Writing Workshop Journal will then be launched to the student body shortly after the holidays.
During the first semester, the primary focus will be recruiting students and supporting them in choosing what they would like to study and write about. Much of this work can take place during night seder and outside of class time.
During the second semester, the focus shifts toward editing students’ work and overseeing the smooth production and publication of the journal. The Student Editor will help guide pieces from draft to publication while coordinating the journal as a whole. This work will require approximately 5 hours per week, most likely Sundays and Tuesdays from 3:00–5:30pm, in lieu of a class, as well as Monday night seder. Most work will take place in the Pardes Beit Midrash.
Important: Supplemental fellowship applications will only be considered once a full Beit Midrash Program application has been received.
