Rabbi Dov Berkovits

Dov Berkovits

Rabbi Dov Berkovits is one of Pardes’s earliest teachers and served as Director of Pardes from 1973 to 1977 and later as a senior faculty member. He is the founder and director of Beit Av, an institute named in memory of his father, Rabbi Eliezer Berkovits, devoted to creativity and renewal through Torah. He studied philosophy and Jewish history at the University of Chicago and Yeshiva University.

Dov is known for developing an approach to Talmud study that looks beyond its legal discussions to uncover their ethical, psychological, and spiritual dimensions. He has written extensively on Talmud, Jewish environmental thought, art, relationships, and contemporary Jewish life, and is the author of numerous books, including Mikdash HaChaim and the Existential Pages series. Before and alongside his work at Pardes, Dov was a research assistant to Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz and a founding teacher at several influential Jerusalem learning communities.
